Individualized Recovery Plan for Adolescents and Young Adults

Individualized Addiction Treatment and Recovery Planning

While there may be similarities between addiction experiences, there’s no such thing as “typical” or “common.” Every situation is different, especially when it comes to teens. The factors that influence addiction can vary widely, including the substance being used, the severity of the addiction, any underlying mental or physical conditions, and environmental factors that contribute to substance use.

With so many factors involved, developing a “one-size-fits-all” approach to adolescent and young adult drug addiction treatment is impossible. Individualized treatment considers each factor to develop a successful treatment plan that’s tailored to the individual.

At Ember Recovery, we meet you where you are and plan for where you’re going with a comprehensive and personalized plan for lasting sobriety.

What Is Individualized Treatment for Teen and Young Adult Addiction?

Individualized treatment plans are an approach to substance use treatment that is designed to meet the specific needs of the patient. No one type of treatment meets the needs of every individual, and research has shown that individualized treatment is overwhelmingly more successful.[1]

These treatment plans may have many facets, including identifying and confronting the underlying reasons for addiction that are unique to the individual. For example, some individuals may have gotten started with substances because of bullying or harassment, whereas others may have used substances at parties because of peer pressure, which grew to problem use. Others may be struggling to cope with the lasting effects of childhood or adolescent trauma.

Each of these individuals would require specialized treatment plans that consider all the health, environmental, and societal factors and their impact on emotional, mental, and physical well-being. Once these factors are recognized, the most effective treatment programs can be implemented.

The Benefits of an Individualized Addiction Treatment Plan

Individualized treatment plans have a better success rate, but that’s not the only benefit of a personalized approach.

Individualized treatment has the following benefits:

  • Taking into account personal experiences with substance use and their mental, emotional, and physical impact
  • The testing, diagnosis, and treatment of specific mental, emotional, and physical health concerns that contribute to addiction
  • The treatment of addiction as a disease, not a moral flaw
  • The use of multiple therapy outlets to help teens with multiple substance use risks and influences

Therapies Utilized in Most Individualized Treatment Plans

Individualized Therapy

Individualized therapy sessions involve one-on-one counseling with the individual in treatment and an experienced staff member. They can work to address their personal experiences and how they may have contributed to the addiction in a safe and non-judgmental space. This also provides an opportunity to identify and correct negative thought patterns that may put them at risk of relapse once treatment is complete.

Group Therapy

Group therapy sessions involve group sessions with recovery peers who are working toward the same recovery goal – often with similar contributing factors. A mental health professional guides and monitors these group therapy sessions to facilitate appropriate topics and discussions, manage conflict and celebrate achievements.

Family Therapy

It can be difficult for parents to leave their children in someone else’s hands for residential addiction treatment. Family can be integrated into the individualized treatment plan through visits, family therapy, and virtual parent information sessions for updates and transparency.

At Ember Recovery, we provide Multidimensional Family Therapy for individual families to work through conflict and increase emotional connections. We also host Strengthening Family Weekends to allow current resident teens, young adults, and family members to come together and enjoy some quality time in conjunction with therapy and training. We focus on teaching parents how to support their children through boundary setting, bonding, and monitoring.

The Ember Recovery Difference

At Ember Recovery, our process starts with a holistic assessment of mental health, diet, relationships, and current substance use. Then, we can tailor the treatment plan to address any struggles or challenges, giving individuals a strong path to future recovery. We have two separate programs that serve our adolescent populations, ages 12-17, and the young adult population, ages 18-24.

Individualized treatment plans take all thoughts, feelings, experiences, health concerns, and personal challenges into account to determine the treatments that are most likely to be successful. This may include gender-specific treatment plans or LGBTQIA+ inclusive plans that consider the unique struggles of these communities.

Ember Recovery offers a full continuum of care, from detox referrals to residential treatment to aftercare recovery planning. We’re with you every step of the way.
